Photomedia Student Exhibition: Bangladesh 2008

ECU Photomedia Lecturer Duncan Barnes in Bangladesh

16 School of Communications and Arts students who are completing studies in Photomedia participated in the inaugural Summer School programme in Bangladesh in January this year. The students worked in collaboration with students from Pathshala, an institution which trains local Bangladeshi students in photojournalism.

Each ECU student completed a photojournalist project which explored the impact of climate change in Bangladesh, a country which is particularly vulnerable to the effects of global warming and climate change. Students travelled to locations throughout Bangladesh to compile a comprehensive, yet intimate vision of people living with the realities of global warming.

The students work will be on exhibition at Spectrum Project Space, Wednesdays to Sundays from the 10 - 18 May. Event details >>

WA Health Minister challenges ECU Journalism students

WA Health Minister Jim McGinty addressing ECU Journalism Students

State Health Minister, the Honourable Jim McGinty, addressed 40 health journalism students on The State Government's Health Policies and Priorities during a guest lecture at the Mount Lawley campus on Monday, 21 April.

The Minister had some great advice for students, stating that while the government must be open to criticism, journalists had to report health stories that were accurate, fair and balanced.

In his opinion some media outlets in Perth had failed in this regard and he urged students to set the bar higher. As future health journalists, the minister urged the students to report the issues and not hidden agendas.

ECU is the only university in Australia to offer health journalism.

Team from the Centre for Excellence in Healthcare Simulation

ECU's Centre for Excellence in Healthcare Simulation recognised for innovation

The ECU Centre for Excellence in Healthcare Simulation was awarded the Innovation in Nursing Award for Western Australia at the recent Australian Nursing Awards. The Australian Nursing Awards were introduced last year to honour and recognise nurses, graduate nurses and nursing innovations that make a difference.

The ECU Centre for Excellence in Healthcare Simulation was developed by the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Postgraduate Medicine to facilitate scenario-based learning to ensure that nursing graduates are well-equipped and confident in dealing with a range of challenging clinical scenarios.

The Innovation in Nursing Award recognises ECU's commitment to producing competent graduates through healthcare simulation and scenario-based learning innovations using actors.

Head of the School, Professor Cobie Rudd, and team leader, Associate Professor Christopher Churchouse, are now hoping to expand the library of scenarios to include specialist areas such as Alzheimer's care, youth suicide, domestic violence and drug and alcohol issues.
